Rugby: Cameron Otago's scrum coach

Former Otago and Highlanders prop Keith Cameron will be Otago's scrum coach this season.

Cameron, who last played first-class rugby in 2010, has taken up the role previously held by Steve Cumberland, who has moved to a coaching role in Japan.

Cameron (38) was a scrum coach with the Highlanders for two years but then moved out of coaching for a few years.

However, he has returned this season and is coaching the Dunedin premier club side.

Otago coach Cory Brown said Cameron was a passionate rugby man who had plenty of experience around the scrum.

The scrum is still an important part of the game and most sides had specialist scrum coaches.

Cameron will complete the coaching team.

Ben Herring will look after defence and lineouts, Cameron will work on the scrum and Brown will take care of the attack.

Meanwhile, Brown said former Southland inside back Scott Eade would arrive in Dunedin over the next two weeks and would be pushing for a place in the Otago squad for the Mitre 10 Cup.

With Hayden Parker and Josh Renton both out for the season through knee injuries, there is a vacancy in the Otago side for an inside back.

Brown said Eade (23), who had been playing in Italy, would have to prove himself and perform in club rugby to win a contract. Eade played one game for the Highlanders last season.

Eade, a former New Zealand colt, is set to play for the Dunedin club.

Other options at halfback include Southern No9 Josh Walden or Taieri halfback Kurt Hammer.

•All Black lock Sam Whitelock will miss the Crusaders' Super rugby clash against the Blues at Eden Park on Saturday due to a hamstring injury, The New Zealand Herald reports.

Whitelock suffered the injury during his team's 29-10 victory over the Waratahs in Christchurch at the weekend, and could be in a race against time to be ready for the All Blacks' first test against Wales in Auckland on June 11.

Fortunately for the Crusaders they have plenty of cover at lock, with Scott Barrett and Jimmy Tupou capable of joining All Black Luke Romano in the second row.
