Rugby: Emery stars for St Kevin’s

St Kevin's College has kept its top-six prospects alive with an exciting 45-39 win against Mt Aspiring College in Cromwell.

Bleak conditions did not always make for an accurate game of rugby. Some of the defence was not of a high standard either but both sides were desperate for the win to remain in contention.

St Kevin's fullback Levi Emery had a wonderful game. He banged over six conversions, a penalty and ran in two tries for a haul of 25 points.

Some of the kicks he landed were from the sideline as well.

"He was obviously very accurate with the boot and also kicked for territory pretty well," coach Justin Fowler said.

"He used speed to finish one of his tries and the other was just power."

While St Kevin's prevailed, Mt Aspiring dominated the opening 20 minutes and had the better of the opening half.

The visiting side trailed 20-17 at the break. The margin could have been larger had it not been for a try shortly before the break to No8 Kalas Teukamo. St Kevin's shunted Mt Aspiring's scrum back and the ball spilt out. Teukamo was on hand to score and his try helped swing the momentum of the match.

"I think we are seventh now. We have a couple of big games coming up. That King's game could be quite crucial if we can beat Kavanagh."

In the other games, South Otago High School beat Dunstan High School 36-11 and King's High School thrashed Taieri College 47-5. Waitaki Boys' High School was too strong for Otago Boys High School 2nd XV, winning 40-15, while competition frontrunner John McGlashan pumped Kavanagh College 56-0.
