Valley has taken some time to find its rugby feet but in its last two encounters has beaten third-placed Maheno and fourth-placed Athletic Marist, lifting itself into a possible Citizens Shield semifinal contender.

At present, it is a point behind Maheno and two points behind Athletic Marist.

Tomorrow, it meets Kurow but will have the home advantage at Weston.

In the first round, Kurow was the better side by nearly 30 points but Valley has made marked improvement in the second round.

It has a virile, aggressive pack, led by Jake Greenslade and the Conlan brothers, Dan and Sean.

Its backline, yet to play with real confidence, must up its defence if it is to hold the Kurow backline which has scored 19 of the 39 tries scored by the side.

Old Boys meets Athletic Marist in the final game of the second round. Athletic Marist's form is far from consistent.

The form it showed on opening day when it beat Excelsior, 57-6, scoring nine tries in some free-flowing rugby has faded, possibly through injuries, although it often appears to simply lack confidence, and it will need plenty of that against the competition leader.

In the other game Excelsior, currently at the tail of the competition, has shown it can produce some good rugby but, like Athletic Marist, and to be fair, most other teams, the lack of depth means that injuries and withdrawals have had an impact on performance.

If it can produce its top 15, Excelsior could extend, if not beat, Maheno.

Old Boys halfback Inoke Naufahu needs only four points in tomorrow's game against Athletic Marist to bring up his century of points for the club season.

Kurow's Ben Nowell, with 79 points, lies second, ahead of Athletic Marist winger Simon Lillicama (74) and Valley's Brad McKenzie (69).

Lillicama heads the premier grade try-scorers with 10, followed by Old Boys loose forward, Lio Havilli (7) and Old Boys front-rower Ralph Darling, Maheno winger Adam Johnson, Kurow winger Sam Fleming and Valley fullback Brad McKenzie, all with five.

Old Boys is the top club try-scorer with 56 in nine games, followed by Kurow (39), Athletic Marist (30), Maheno (25), Valley (20) and Excelsior (19).
