The Highlanders have named an exciting backline while a Chiefs warrior returns as a high-stake battle looms tomorrow night.

The Highlanders have also brought back veteran lock Alex Ainley to the starting side and kept faith with flanker James Lentjes for the match.

The game, to be played in front of a full house at Forsyth Barr Stadium, has plenty of implications for both sides, with first place in the New Zealand conference at stake.

The Highlanders have put Matt Faddes at centre for the match, after he came off the bench last week, and have moved Malakai Fekitoa in one place to second five-eighth. Captain Ben Smith will form a potent back three, with Waisake Naiholo and Patrick Osborne.

Up front, Lentjes gets another start on the openside flank.

Lentjes had been virtually unsighted all year but with Shane Christie going down with a mystery illness and Dan Pryor preferred to come off the bench, Lentjes played against the Jaguares last week.

The Taieri man put in a good effort in Buenos Aires and coach Jamie Joseph has kept the faith.

Christie is back in Dunedin but it remains unclear what is his actual health issue is.

Prop Daniel Linert-Brown gets a start after missing last week because of a knee injury and Josh Hohneck drops to the reserves.

Hooker Liam Coltman is a welcome addition to the bench following a lengthy spell on the sideline due to a damaged toe.

Also on the bench is All Black Liam Squire, who has been cleared of any concussion issues.

He left the field two weeks ago against the Kings and did not travel to Argentina.

Joseph has named six forwards on the bench and no outside back reserve.

He will be looking to use his bench wisely, as the game is bound to be fast.

It will be a welcome home of sorts for prop Kane Hames, who played the past two seasons for the Highlanders.

He initially withdrew from Super rugby this year because of issues with his knees but injuries to Chiefs props have Hames back in the action.

He will start the game for the Chiefs tomorrow and be joined by Nathan Harris and Atu Moli in the front row.

All Black lock Brodie Retallick returns to the action while Liam Messam, who came off the bench last week, will start at No8.

Messam has quickly made the switch from sevens duty to the 15-man game while Sam Cane moves to his normal openside flanking role.

Aaron Cruden will link up with the feisty Tawera Kerr-Barlow in the inside backs with new All Black Seta Tamanivalu at centre.

The match will be referred by Glen Jackson.
