Otago has been beaten 22-18 by Auckland in the national championship game at Carisbrook this afternoon.

Auckland led 8-3 at half-time before Otago equalised through a stunning Karne Hesketh try.

Auckland leaped to a 22-8 lead before Otago winger Ryan Shortland scored to narrow the gap.

Otago searched in vain for the winning try as it was beaten for a fourth time in sx games, its only consolation another bonus point for a close loss.

Otago's next game is the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Canterbury in Christchurch on Saturday.
