Nerves took over as Highlanders midfielder Malakai Fekitoa headed on to Eden Park with just 20 minutes to go to make his test rugby debut for the All Blacks, against England, on Saturday night.

''It was a tough time to go in,'' the first-time All Black said at Dunedin International Airport last night.

The teams were tied 9-9l at the time with the All Blacks winning the game in the last minutes.

He was still getting used to ''being part of the family'' and the huge honour it was to get out on the field as an All Black.

''I hope in the second game I'll be more confident and do the job properly.''

Fekitoa (22) and the rest of the All Blacks squad arrived at the airport last night to a welcome from King's and Queen's High Schools' kapa haka group.

About 200 people filled the arrivals lounge to catch a glimpse of the team.

All Black captain Richie McCaw told the crowd it was great to be back in Dunedin and the team appreciated such a welcome.

''We're looking forward to Saturday.''

The team then took the time to sign autographs - on notebooks, rugby shirts and even the arms of some youngsters.

''I'm not going to shower for a long time,'' Ben Mann (7) said, showing off a Ma'a Nonu autograph on his arm.

A pipe band piped the team out of the airport.

Dunedin City Council events special projects co-ordinator Tammy Jackman said fans would also have the chance to see the All Blacks at a free special event at the Dunedin Town Hall today from 3.30pm to 5pm.

The All Blacks play England at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.
