Cometh the hour, cometh the man from Green Island.

Ben Smith started his first test at fullback on Saturday night and, on his home track, put in an absolute stunner.

He saved a try, which effectively saved the game for the All Blacks. He then scored a try, and played his part in a try to win the game.

There was not much more the 28-year-old could have done.

In the final minute of the first half, he sprinted at least 60m from one side of the field to the other to lower English winger Manu Tuilagi.

Tuilagi, all 113kg of him, is no easy man to slow down but Smith did that with a copybook tackle.

He then got up and won the ball back and the All Blacks ended up with a penalty, which was converted into three points.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen was full of praise for his fullback.

''I thought he was outstanding. That running down of Manu was sensational. And then to get up and get the ball and get us on to an attack where we won a penalty, well, that was crucial,'' Hansen said.

''That was a pretty special performance. It is tough on Izzy [injured fullback Israel Dagg] because he has been playing well, too. It is the old adage - someone gets a break - and he has taken it with both hands.''

Smith was playing down his contribution, though he said playing in Dunedin was special.

''I quite enjoy being at home.

''You get to sneak off back to your own house and chill out a wee bit,'' Smith said.

''It is awesome to play here at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

''It is a great place to play running rugby and that is the kind of rugby I enjoy.''

Lowering Tuilagi was just part of a fullback's job, a position he preferred.

''I was just trying my best to get across to him. I was lucky enough to trip him up. It was just one of those things, really.

''I thought I had a good angle on him. At that point, you try and do your best to stop a big man like him.

''You do not have that much time to think. You just try and do the best job you can.''
