ODT Online rugby contributor Jeff Cheshire rates the Highlanders on their performance against the Kings in Port Elizabeth.

Ben Smith 6/10: Made a couple of good breaks, but made a few mistakes too including some average kicks.

Tino Nemani 5/10: Did not get many chances but did not go looking for them either, virtually non-existent.

Tamati Ellison 6/10: Solid performance, made a couple of breaks and was generally good on defence.

Shaun Treeby 6.5/10: Looked the most likely of the Highlanders backs. Was strong with ball in hand, ran incisively and created a handful of opportunities.

Hosea Gear 6/10: Tried to get involved but again saw limited opportunities. Still managed to find his way to the line though and was strong running into contact when he did get his hands on the ball.

Colin Slade 4.5/10: Give him credit for having the vision and skill to score the first try. Other than this it was not flash from Slade, kicking poorly and falling off too many tackles.

Aaron Smith 5.5/10: Fell off a couple of tackles and did not kick particularly well. Passed well when given the chance but a lack of ball gave him limited chances to play well on attack.

TJ Ioane 6/10: Ran hard and threw himself into everything but did not quite make the same impact this week. Was unlucky to be pulled as early as he was.

John Hardie 6.5/10: Made a truck-load of tackles as he has done all season and linked well wide when he got his chances.

Jarrad Hoeata 5.5/10: Had a quiet game, tried to work hard as always but did not make much of an impact.

Josh Bekhuis 5.5/10: Another who did not make much of an impact and did not feature at lineout time either.

Brad Thorn 6.5/10: Was physical and hit everything hard in a typical Brad Thorn performance.

Chris King 5.5/10: Had a fairly quiet game, part of a faltering scrum and came off at half time.

Andrew Hore 6.5/10: Played well, working hard in the loose and trying to lead by example.

Tony Woodcock 5/10: Fell off too many tackles and got out-scrummed, not a memorable performance.

Liam Coltman 6/10: Worked hard and did little wrong taking over from where Hore left off.

Ma'afu Fia 5/10: Came on at halftime and made too many mistakes, dropping balls and missing tackles.

Mose Tuialii 6.5/10: Provided good go-forward with ball in hand. Made an impact upon his introduction which should see him start the next game and Ioane move to blindside flanker.

Joe Wheeler 5/10: Did not make much of an impact and missed a couple of tackles.

Fumiaki Tanaka 6/10: Had much more ball to play with than Smith but did well nonetheless. His fast pass made a difference to the backline and he showed he was prepared to snipe.

Hayden Parker (No Rating): It was hard to understand why they left it so long to bring him on, especially when Slade was having a shocker.

Jason Emery 6.5/10: Injected himself well, made a break and worked hard on defence. Should start the next game on the wing even if it means playing him out of position.
