ODT Online rugby writer Jeff Cheshire rates the Highlanders after their win against the Bulls in Dunedin last night.

Ben Smith 7.5/10: Was outstanding on defence and made a crucial try-saving tackle late in the game. Took some good high balls too and did well with the chances he got on attack.

Richard Buckman 8/10: Had the Bulls under all sorts of pressure with his strong chasing and made a handful of good runs too.

Malakai Fekitoa 8/10: Provided the spark which led to two tries, one of which he beat his man and set up Gareth Evans well, the other which saw him break straight through the defence and score a brilliant solo try.

Shaun Treeby 7/10: Secured a penalty at the breakdown, which led to a lineout downfield in which he ran on to a long throw and made the break to set up the first Highlanders try. And with that, the Highlanders were back in the game and the momentum had begun to shift.

Patrick Osborne 7.5/10: Chased hard and did well defensively and under the high ball. Made a couple of outstanding runs too, including one that sparked the sequence which led to the second try.

Lima Sopoaga 8.5/10: Made all of his kicks at goal, kicked well in general play to allow his chasers to compete, ran dangerously in the second half and took the right options at the right times.

Aaron Smith 7.5/10: Passed well and kicked accurately. Began to add more spark in the second half after he started receiving better ball.

Elliot Dixon 7.5/10: Worked hard being the equal-leading tackler and was strong with ball in hand. Got to the breakdown quickly along with his other two loosies, which slowed down the Bulls ball.

Shane Christie 7.5/10: The other leading tackler in the team, making some desperate ones covering for first-up misses in the line. Linked well and made a couple of very good runs, snaffled two turnovers too.

Gareth Evans 7/10: Worked hard defensively and was fast around the field.

Joe Wheeler 6.5/10: Made his tackles and got to the breakdowns, while also hitting the line at a great angle to create the momentum for Fekitoa's try.

Brad Thorn 7/10: When the team was struggling early with the physicality, Brad Thorn answered the call and matched the Bulls in contact. Unfortunately had to leave the field early after taking a knock.

Chris King 6.5/10: Did well on defence, making some good tackles and held up alright in the scrums.

Liam Coltman 6.5/10: Was very good around the field, getting involved and throwing himself into everything, but missed the hook a couple of times in the scrums which was not good.

Kane Hames 6/10: Was inconsistent at scrum time, but he did have his good moments. Got through enough work, but did not impose himself physically either.

Ged Robinson 6/10: Made six tackles after coming on with 17 minutes to go and was very involved in the defensive effort late in the game.

Ma'afu Fia (No Rating): Came on late and made a few tackles, but also conceded two scrum penalties.

Jarrad Hoeata 6.5/10: Carried on Brad Thorn's good work, was busy around the field and was prominent in defending the rolling maul.

John Hardie (No Rating): Made a couple of tackles and came up with a breakdown turnover while hard on defence.

Fumiaki Tanaka (No Rating): Got the last three minutes and was tidy in this time.

Trent Renata (No Rating): Also came on with three minutes to go, did not get much to do other than a left-footed clearance.

Nasi Manu 7.5/10: Made nine tackles and secured two turnovers in 17 minutes. Added energy and was quick to get over the ball at the breakdown.
