The Highlanders delighted their North Otago fans with a 40-12 win over the Crusaders in Oamaru today.

Billed as a friendly designed largely to keep players fit during the Super Rugby break, the game featured no lack of endeavour and commitment.

The Highlanders, in particular, were resolute in defence and showed some flashes of attacking brilliance.

Marty Banks guided the Highlanders superbly from first five, rookie halfback Te Aihe Toma impressed, and captain Shane Christie got through a power of work.

The Highlanders scored six tries to two in an excellent run-out before they head to South Africa.

Highlanders 40 (Rob Thompson, Jason Emery, Ryan Tongia, Te Aihe Toma, Fa'asoi Fuatai, Fletcher Smith tries; Marty Banks 4 con, Smith con), Crusaders 12 (Matt Todd, Mitchell Hunt tries; Richie Mo'unga con). Halftime: Highlanders 14-7.
