Fans wanting to see the Highlanders take on the British & Irish Lions next year will have their first chance to buy tickets when they go on general sale in October.

The Lions will take on the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Tuesday June 13 in the fourth game of their 10-match tour.

Tickets for non-test matches will range in price from $39 to $129, while children's tickets start at $29 for all non-tests except the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians match, for which they will start at $10.

They will be released to the general public on October 28, after a priority period for those involved with rugby.

A ballot will be used to allocate tickets to the test matches, as demand is likely to outweigh the capacity of both Eden Park and Westpac Stadium, the two venues for the three-match series.

The ballot will open online on September 5, with fans living in New Zealand having the chance to apply for tickets. Fans can increase their chances in the ballot if they are season ticket holders, members of the rugby community and Team All Blacks members.

Test tickets will range in price from $149 to $449.

The ballot will be drawn in mid-November.

New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew said it was important to make the tour as affordable as possible.

"We believe we've settled on a fair level of pricing for what is the biggest event New Zealand will host since Rugby World Cup 2011," Tew said.

"A family of four will be able to see the British & Irish Lions take on their Super Rugby team for under $160, while the tests are priced at about the level of a Rugby World Cup quarterfinal or other major international event.

"We believe we've got the balance right - we want to encourage as many New Zealanders as possible to embrace this unique rugby experience as we welcome the legions of Lions fans to our shores once again."

"We're aiming at having at least 250,000 tickets across the 10 matches available to buy. The remaining tickets are being sold through official travel and hospitality packages.

"We're already seeing significant demand for tickets in the UK and Ireland with Lions Rugby Travel likely to sell out their allocation of tickets as part of their Supporter Tours packages."

He said a successful series on and off the field was critical to the future of rugby in New Zealand.

The Lions last toured New Zealand in 2005, when they played two matches in the south, beating Otago 30-19 and Southland 26-16.

The 2017 tour begins on June 3 with a match against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians in Whangerei and finishes on July 8 with the third test against the All Blacks at Eden Park.
