ODT Online rugby writer Jeff Cheshire rates Otago's players after their loss to Manawatu  at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Friday.

Trent Renata 4/10: Had a couple of nice runs early, but did not offer much after that. Kicked too far and was too high going into contact close to the line.

Jayden Spence 5/10: Did not see much ball and really is being wasted on the wing.

Michael Collins 4/10: Offered nothing on attack and was made to look far too slow on defence, at times being run around without even getting a hand on his man.

Tei Walden 6/10: Ran strongly and broke a few tackles, while also being solid defensively.

Fa'asiu Fuatai 6.5/10: Looked quite good with ball in hand and looked to get involved regularly, but loses a mark for a few mistakes, including a bad missed tackle.

Peter Breen 5/10: Another who did not really offer a lot despite being tidy.

Josh Renton 4.5/10: Began to look a bit more physical and passed okay, but made a couple of bad mistakes including an awful one while covering, which really detracts from his game.

Charlie O'Connell 6/10: Worked pretty hard, as he will, but again never made an impact.

James Lentjes 7.5/10: One of Otago's better performers, tackled well, was strong at the breakdown which enabled him to turnover some ball and ranged well on attack.

Hugh Blake 6/10: Similar to O'Connell in that he worked hard and deserves credit for that, but did not really make an impact so is never going to be more than a six.

Tom Franklin 8/10: Easily Otago's best player. Really active on defence and was physical too, looked good in the lineout as well.

Joe Latta 7/10: Worked hard and added physicality, another one of Otago's better performers.

Scott Manson 5/10: Made a few tackles, although was hardly outstanding.

Liam Coltman 6/10: Same old from Coltman, looked very good for parts, making tackles and throwing well, but then had a couple of mistakes including a bad miss under the post, which he still needs to stamp out of his game.

Aki Seiuli 7/10: Pretty quiet in the first half, but had a huge second half where he made some strong runs and got around the field better.

Sam Anderson-Heather 6.5/10: Another who got involved, came on and added energy.

Hisa Sasagi 6/10: Got around the field well and had his hands on the ball a bit. Was not getting much help from his flankers in the scrums.

Jackson Hemopo 7/10: Made a definite impact, good in the lineout, ran strongly, did a nice offload and threw himself around on defence.

TJ Ioane 5/10: Was trying to make an impact by throwing himself into contact, but just did not seem to be able to make a dent.

Nick Ealey 6/10: Pretty tidy and provided better ball than Renton.

Hayden Parker 6.5/10: Clearly looked a class above Breen, got the ball through his hands quicker and seemed to be more in control.

Marshall Suckling 5/10: Tidy and worked hard, but did not offer much, typical of the Otago outside backs this year.
