Ryo Aono, of Japan, and Kelly
Clark, of the United States, emerged victorious in the New
Zealand Snowboard Open halfpipe on Saturday afternoon, to
join slopestylers Mark McMorris, of Canada, and Jamie
Anderson, of the United States, as the top competitors.
All winners took home $7,000 for their final performances.
Clark has now won 10 international opens in a row and was
"stoked" to keep the streak going.
"It was a really great day," Clark said. "The level of riding
from the women was amazing. I am happy to be a part of the
progression of the sport and happy to come out on top."
Clark won 88.10 points for tricks that included a frontside
720, cab 720, backside 540 and frontside cork 900.
Hannah Teter, of the United States, was second and Castellet
Queralt, of Spain, was third.
Aono, the men's winner, was happy with his first run, which
won him 92.28 points and the event.
"I have competed three or four times before with not the best
results and am very happy to be on the podium this time
around. During practice, I worked on a special run that I
ended up hitting perfectly in competition. I am very happy,"
he said.
Aono's run included a frontside 1080, cab 1080, frontside
900, backside 900 and frontside 1080 double cork.
Louie Vito, of the United States, was second and Iouri
Podladtchikov, of Switzerland, was third.
The New Zealand open was the first major halfpipe competition
of the 2011-2012 Ticket to Ride world tour and the
competition now moves to the northern hemisphere.
