Surf life-saving: Four more medals put NZ into lead

The Black Fins added four medals to its tally to jump past host France and into the overall lead at the world championships yesterday.

After racking up four gold, three silver and two bronze on day one, the defending champion New Zealanders, captained by St Clair's Andrew McMillan, won one gold, two silver and a bronze on day two.

McMillan, who swam for New Zealand at the London 2012 Olympics as a member of the 4x100m medley relay team, won silver in the men's 50m carry to add to the two silver medals he won on day one.

Laura Quilter (Wainui) claimed gold in the women's line throw, Natasha Hind (Lyall Bay) took silver in the women's 200m super lifesaver and Steven Kent (Titahi Bay) secured bronze in the men's 100m maniken carry with fins.

The Black Fins now have 424 competition points, 13 more than France in second, while Italy is third with 381.

St Clair's Andrew Trembath tasted success for the New Zealand youth team on its opening day of competition yesterday, winning two golds in the Kiwis' nine-medal haul.

Trembath won gold in the men's board rescue with Ben Johnston (Papamoa) and in the men's tube rescue with Matthew Scott (Midway), Jacob Hales (Papamoa) and Ben Cochrane (Omanu).

In the inflatable boat rescue competition, St Clair's Steph and Carla Laughton won a pair of silver medals with Hannah Cullen and Tasha Scott as patients in the tube and mass rescue events.
