Quite simply, Murray is a sporting master

Murray Taylor has won so many medals there is not enough room for them all at the Olympic Gym in Mosgiel.

That is because Taylor (77) has won 120 medals - 59 gold, 39 silver and 22 bronze - in the New Zealand, Australian and South Island masters games since he started competing in 1998.

While 107 of them hang from a wall inside the gym, there is not yet room for the other 13.

Taylor, who used to keep the medals in a bag at home, said there are plans to find space for the rest of his haul at the gym.

His haul includes medals won in golf, fishing, cross country, 5-10km walks, euchre, indoor triathlons, mini golf, table tennis and indoor rowing.

Of all the different sports, golf, fishing and rowing are his favourites, and the majority of his medals have been won in rowing.

Most recently, he won four silver indoor rowing medals at the Australian Pan Pacific games last month.

Despite all his success, Taylor, a Farmlands real estate agent, downplayed his achievements - because of a lack of competition.

''I'm older, and I think there is a lot of people that don't get out there and do some exercise,'' he said.

Born and raised on the Taieri, Taylor farmed at Otokia until the 1980 floods. He then became a stock agent for 16 years, before turning to real estate.

Taylor has always been interested in sport, playing rugby for Taieri before giving it up for golf after getting ''knocked about'' too much.

When he was diagnosed with diabetes, he turned to the gym.

In between work and fishing, he works out at the Olympic Gym at least three times a week, and has also started swimming.

Taylor has plenty of time to train before attempting to add to his medal tally.

His next competition is not until the masters games in Timaru next October. He better make sure there is enough room at the gym for more medals first.
