Otago swimmers performed well at the South Island
championships in Queenstown over the weekend.
Though Canterbury came out on top in the regional competition
across all clubs, Otago was not far behind.
Waves coach Andy Adair said the competition was strong at the
meet in the facility in Queenstown and there were some
impressive performances from some up-and-comers, while
experienced swimmers showed their class.
Matthew Glassford (20), from the Neptune club, won five
titles and was in the top three of all his events, showing
the benefits of some excellent winter training.
Stefannie Gillespie (15), of the Waves club, swam well to win
the 200m and 400m butterfly events in her grade.
Katie Kenneally (19), also from the Neptune club, picked up
five titles.
Matt Henderson (13), previously from the Wanaka club but now
from Neptune, swept the board in the breaststroke swim in the
13-and-under category.
Cameron Bennie (13), from the Alexandra club, won the 100m
and 200m butterfly in the 13-and-under age group.
Cromwell's Emma Paton (12) did well to win the 13-and-under
individual medley.
Jeremy Tasker (16), of Oamaru, won the 16-and-over 400m
individual medley.
Queenstown's Sophie Gibson (12) won the 13-and-under
butterfly.
Another Waves swimmer, Tray Balvert (18), showed excellent
endurance to win the 1500m in the 16-and-over category.
