Swimming: Godfrey takes three more golds for eight in total

Kate Godfrey added three more gold medals to her haul as the Otago championships wrapped up at Moana Pool at the weekend.

Godfrey (21), of Neptune, finished the five-day championships with eight gold and two silver medals in the women's 17 and over bracket.

She won the 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley at the weekend to add to her already impressive haul from last week, when she won the 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.

She had a good battle with Isobel Ryan (18), of Oamaru, in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle.

Ryan came out on top in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, before Godfrey bounced back to win the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle.

Godfrey and Ryan were two of about 200 Otago, Canterbury and Southland swimmers competing in the Otago and Canterbury championships, where swimmers from all three provinces swam together but their results were segregated.

It was the fourth straight year the Canterbury and Otago championships have been held together since the February 22, 2011 Christchurch earthquake destroyed the QEII pool, leaving the city without a 50m long-course pool.

Four other Otago swimmers - Kou Kitahara (13), of Neptune, Matthew Glassford (24), of Neptune, Devon Familton (15), of Neptune and Mila Jojic (13), of Queenstown - won six gold medals during the five days of competition.

Caitlin Deans (15), of Neptune, Cecilia Crooks (14), of Neptune, Tame Govaerts (15), of Zenith, and Sophie Fairbairn (15), of Wanaka, also had impressive championships, each winning five gold medals.

Other Otago swimmers to win gold medals: Nick Pryde (four), Jeremy Tasker (four), Olivia Gold (three), Cameron Jones (three), Gabrielle Trotter (three), Ella Rose Lawrence (two), Isobel Ryan (two), Noel Bisson (two), Samuel Wardhaugh (two), Saskia Turner (two), Danielle Walsh (two), Erin Ford (two), Tandia Gooch (one), Madeline McCane (one), Ben Carr (one), Hamish McLean (one), Cameron Moran (one) and Matt Robinson (one)
