Swimming: Vying to take next step

Three hundred swimmers from 86 clubs across the country will compete in the national division II championships at Moana Pool in Dunedin starting today.

The competition attracts the next generation of young swimmers striving to push on to the top age-group and elite levels.

Kent Stead, of Swimming New Zealand, said the same number of swimmers were competing as a year ago in Hamilton, but more clubs were involved.

''It is a real testament to the development of young swimmers across the country and to the hard work by clubs big and small to raise the funds to enable their swimmers to compete,'' he said.

Waikato, last year's host, has the biggest club representation, with 38 swimmers from 12 clubs.

Canterbury will have the most swimmers present for the long course meet, with 49 participants from 11 clubs, 16 from Wharenui Swim Club alone.

Northland has 22 swimmers from seven clubs travelling to Dunedin from the top of the country.

The competition, which is for swimmers aged 13 and over, finishes on Saturday.

Heats will run from 9am and finals from 6pm each day.
