Swimming: Neptune pair part of strong NZ university team

Otago students Kate Godfrey and Caroline Baddock will be part of a powerful New Zealand team at the World University Games in Korea in July.

The Neptune club competitors have been named in a 19-strong team, the biggest New Zealand has sent to the event.

The swimmers qualified at the recent national championships for the summer Universiade, which is expected to attract 12,000 athletes from 170 nations for the 28th biennial event.

There should be plenty of motivation for the New Zealanders after the team failed to win any medals in 2013.

That was in stark contrast to their efforts in the 2011 event, when the New Zealand team won a remarkable 12 medals, which more than doubled its tally from all World University Games since first taking part in 1983.

Three swimmers - Godfrey, Matthew Hutchins (Canterbury) and Laura Quilter (North Shore) - return from the 2013 Universiade in Russia.

Quilter is joined by fellow Glasgow Commonwealth Games representatives Samantha Lee, Ewan Jackson and Mitchell Donaldson.

Michael Mincham (Auckland) competed at the Youth Olympics last year, national open water champion Kane Radford (Rotorua) has qualified for the world championships, and in-form Waikato swimmer Helena Gasson won four titles at the national championships.

Swimmers on scholarships at American colleges include Auckland's Georgia Marris (Florida), North Canterbury's Natasha Lloyd (Auburn),Christchurch's Sophia Batchelor (Florida), Auckland's Alex Peach (Delta State), Christchurch's Matthew Hutchins (Wisconsin) and Waikato's Sam Perry (Stanford).

The World University Games run from July 3 to July 14 in Gwangju.
