Swimming: Three more for the team

The New Zealand para-swimming team added two gold medals and a silver medal to its bulging haul at the world championships in Glasgow yesterday.

Mary Fisher held her nerve in a thrilling sprint finish to win gold by just 0.11sec in the women's SM11 200m individual medley final.

Fisher swam down rival Daniela Schulte (Germany) in the last 50m to win gold. Schulte went into the final with the fastest time but could not match the finishing speed of Fisher.

New Zealand's youngest Paralympian, Nikita Howarth, was in blistering form as she defended her world title and won gold in the women's SM7 200m individual medley.

Howarth (16) took control of the race in an outstanding breaststroke leg and did not look back.

She continued to extend her lead, finishing in 2min 59.85sec, nearly 5sec in front of silver medallist Tess Routliffe (Canada).

It was only the second time Howarth had swum under 3min in this event.

Sophie Pascoe won silver in the women's S10 100m backstroke in 1min 7.52sec.

Pascoe executed the race well and swam close to a personal best.

Jesse Reynolds was in action in the heat of the men's S9 50m freestyle, placing seventh in 28.63sec.

Although Reynolds did not qualify for the final, he swam a personal-best time.

''This was a great day of exhilarating racing for the team,'' New Zealand coach Jon Shaw said.

''Mary and Nikita really showed their strength and ability in their individual events, and Sophie's determination puts us in good stead for the next 12 months.

''We now have five Rio 2016 Paralympic Games slots secured for the nation so far and look forward to selection of the team in April next year.''
