Swimming: Pascoe, Dubber add to medal tally

The New Zealand para swimming team bagged more medals at the world championships in Glasgow at the weekend.

After Sophie Pascoe claimed gold and Rebecca Dubber silver yesterday, New Zealand's medal tally reached 15 with one day left.

Pascoe qualified second fastest for the women's S10 100m freestyle but showed her class in the final, swimming down Aurelie Rivard (Canada) in the last 25m to clock 1min 0.16sec, winning by 0.09sec and retaining her title.

Dubber, seeking her second medal, had pole position in the S7 100m backstroke final.

American swimmer Courtney Jordan took the early lead but Dubber stayed with her all the way, sprinted hard at the finish and was beaten to the wall by 0.65sec by Ying Zhang (China). Her time of 1min 23.98sec was a significant personal best.

Fellow New Zealander Nikita Howarth was fifth in 1min 28.09sec, clipping 3.5sec off her personal best.

Jesse Reynolds qualified second for the men's S9 400m freestyle, finishing fifth in a personal best time of 4min 27.09sec, and Mary Fisher finished sixth in the women's SB11 100m breaststroke.

On Saturday, both Pascoe and Howarth won gold.

Pascoe set a blistering pace in the S10 100m butterfly, winning in 1min 3.74sec, just 0.02sec outside her own world record.

Howarth looked in great form in the S7 50m butterfly, winning gold in 35.93sec.

''I did a pretty good time in the heat and then followed it up in the final. I was really happy with my swim and gold medal,'' Howarth said.

Cameron Leslie was eighth in the men's SB3 50m breaststroke final.
