Tennis: Big names draw crowds for tennis action

Since it began in Auckland in 1986 the ASB Classic tennis tournament has grown to become one of the most popular and anticipated events in the city for the summer.

This year a mix of big names and off-court entertainment are sure to bring in the crowds. Today the Herald has all you need to know about the tournament, including what's happening off court and what you need to bring to get through your day at the tennis.

Top players to grace the court in Auckland include Venus Williams, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki and Kiwi favourite Marina Erakovic.

"We will certainly be the envy of many larger tournaments around the world given the strength of our fields this year," said tournament director Karl Budge.

Prize money is $305,000 and fans will surely be hoping for a final reminiscent of 2014 when Venus Williams was unsuccessful when she went up against Ana Ivanovic. The pair thrashed out what was described as one of the best finals seen at international level.

After touching down in Auckland on Saturday, Williams said she intends to do "a whole lot better" at the 2015 tournament.

"I definitely feel the energy and I've been hitting well and I'm looking forward to getting started," she said.

"Last year was so amazing and I got so close but ran into a better player. It was the first of four finals for me last year and I was actually reflecting on that as I came through security. I was like 'last year wasn't bad' so I'd love to make it a lot better."

Tickets are still available for today and tomorrow's ASB Classic action and for Wednesday night.

The other days are almost sold out but you can catch all the play live on Sky Sport 4.
