Tennis: Eastern beats Balmacewen Federer in only completed tie

Eastern Harbour beat Balmacewen Federer 4-2 in the only completed tie in Dunedin club tennis after mid afternoon rain on Saturday left the Logan Park courts unplayable.

St Clair leads Balmacewen Djokovic 2-1 with other rubbers evenly poised, while the Tertiary team takes a break leaving Taieri with a bye.

Harbour's Ryan Eggers was pushed for a time by Shane Keenan but came home solidly for a 6-4, 6-1 win in the top singles.

There was a minor surprise when the lightly built Lachlan Kenneally (15) was too consistent for the powerfully built Matt MacCutcheon, winning 7-6, 6-3 and hinting of a promising future.

Fraser Richardson was the only singles winner for Balmacewen, battling to a three set result against Danny Frigberg. He also partnered McCutcheon to a three set doubles win, completed on the synthetic grass courts later in the day.

Tony Ryder won singles and doubles in short order for St Clair, while Paddy Ou and George Alexander took the top doubles for Balmacewen over Mitchell Sizemore and Robin Versteeg 7 6, 6-2.

The top single is interestingly poised with Ou leading Sizemore 5-4 in a match which has selection order implications for the Otago team. Warren Watson and William Muller are locked at 3-3.

The uncompleted matches have to be played in the teams' own time before next weekend.
