Taieri maintained its lead in Dunedin club tennis with a 4-2 win over Balmacewen on Saturday.

In the feature single, Paddy Ou (Balmacewen) turned around his national junior second round loss to Carlos Reid, but he had to come from behind, then face some nervous moments in the third set before clinching victory in a final tiebreak.

Reid was totally dominant in the first set, which he took to love, but Ou lifted his game to level the match by taking the second set, 6-4.

He then sped to a 5-2 lead in the decider, but Reid broke back to level at 5-all then 6-all. Both players had had plenty of chances but Ou took an early lead in the tiebreak after some unforced errors from Reid, and he was able to hold on.

The result will be a boost for Ou with upcoming rep matches and tournaments in mind, after he had been in the shadows of his main rivals in the first part of the season.

Darryl Paterson and Phil Williams were all efficiency in taking straight sets wins in the middle order, and Taieri took both doubles, although it needed a third set tiebreak in the bottom one.

St Clair beat Eastern Harbour 5-1, a surprisingly comfortable result, with junior Lauchie Kenneally providing the only consolation point in a three-set win over Damian Hill.

In the top single, Mitchell Sizemore got his second win against Ryan Eggers in the new year, after his win in the North Otago Open semi-final.

He used an aggressive game to overcome the subtle variations Eggers is renowned for, and won 6-4, 6-2 as his power game proved increasingly effective.

Veterans Robin Versteeg and Tony Ryder won in straight sets against Henry Hailes and Christiaan Faber respectively, and looked more prepared after the Christmas break.

They also combined well in doubles, dropping only three games while Sizemore and Hill took the top doubles match in straight sets.
