Tennis: Taieri winner of men’s competition

Taieri  won the Dunedin men's competition when it beat Eastern Harbour 4-2 on the final day of competition on Saturday.

Taieri had started the day on 72 points while St Clair, which had the last-round bye, was on 76.

With four points for the team win plus one point per rubber the task was simply to take the team win.

It won both doubles and was able to complete the job on its home courts.

The top single went to Harbour's Ryan Eggers, who fought back from a 2-6 first-set loss to gradually assert himself 6-4, 6-2 in the next two against Carlos Reid.

Reid has perhaps not won as many as expected for Taieri, but his value has been in allowing experienced stalwarts Darryl Paterson, Phil Williams and Graeme Clarke to gain success in the middle and lower order.

Paterson won against Christiaan Faber without dropping a game, and Williams was almost as convincing beating William Muller 6-3, 6-1.

Clarke, recently returned from injury, confined himself to doubles, and partnered Williams to a straight-sets win.

Reid and Paterson matched the feat and the only other success for Harbour came from Danny Frigberg, who beat Connor Morrison in the bottom single 7-6, 6-2.

In the other tie played, Balmacewen beat the Tertiary team 5-1.

Tertiary's top player, Aaron Hicks, was away and a lack of communication resulted in a replacement player being at the wrong venue.

However Hamish Low, a Nelson student, gave Paddy Ou plenty to think about, using the wind and synthetic grass surface to advantage to win the first set 6-3, while Ou was not able to use his renowned sharp movement and retrieving.

Ou dominated the second set by being more aggressive and took it 6-1 but Low fought to the end, losing the third set 7-5.

Shane Keenan beat Max Olson 6-1, 6-1 and partnered Ou to a doubles win while the only win for the students was taken by Laurie Evans.
