The Otago Tennis Player of the Year winners have been named and, for the first time, the men's title has been shared.

Aaron Hicks and Mitchell Sizemore have been given joint status, while the women's title has been won by Rileigh Fields.

Although Hicks held an unbeaten record over all his Otago rivals, his second round loss to Queenstown junior Manawa Rakete-Shea (15) in the Otago Open, won by Sizemore, would have counted against him.

His effort in completing three more wins in the consolation event, despite the disappointment of losing the title he had held, was acknowledged.

Hicks, who plays part of the summer at No1 for Howick in Auckland, did have losses while playing in the top spot for Otago, but against very highly ranked players for the most part.

He also won the Otago Indoor Open early in the season under review.

Sizemore (18) won both the Otago Open singles and doubles and was runner up to former University of California star Riki McLachlan in the Queenstown Open.

He also won the Otago Junior (18 and under) singles and doubles.

He won three from three at the South Island Teams' event and began to record wins against his closest local rivals on a regular basis, after being in their shadow in recent times.

Despite taking Hicks to three sets he is still looking for that scalp.

Sizemore was also awarded the most improved medal after rising two ranking bands in the national system and taking second ranking in Otago, up from fifth.

Fields (17) won the women's title while still a schoolgirl, but the provincial reality is that all her main opponents are in the junior category.

She won the Otago Open and Indoor Open, and these rate highly in the criteria.

She did lose a match to each of her main rivals, Eliza Booth and Abby Edwards, in school or junior fixtures, but stepped up at senior level when it counted.

Fields also played for the Southern region at the junior nationals as well as the Otago senior team, and was acknowledged for showing leadership for her school and with younger Otago juniors.

The most improved female award went to Edwards, who travels from Balclutha, and who went up many points in the national rankings.

She also played for the regional juniors at national level, played for Otago seniors and represented her school at South Island level.

She won the Otago junior title, for 16 and under.
