Balmacewen men continued on its winning way with a whitewash
of a depleted Mornington Roslyn Privateers in Dunedin club
tennis on Tuesday night.
Closest rivals St Clair and Eastern Harbour kept in touch
with contrasting wins.
Harbour beat Taieri 6-0 while St Clair needed a sets
countback to beat Mornington Roslyn Privateers.
In the only women's tie played, St Clair won both singles but
surprisingly lost the doubles against Balmacewen.
It remains a clear leader in the competition.
Conrad Wong and Hee Bum Chung took the top order for
Balmacewen in straight sets and the lower order was won by
default.
Taieri's only resistance came when Andrew Mitchell pushed
Alan de Zwart to 6-7 4-6.
Newcomer Campbell Higgins, a student from Tauranga, was
impressive for Harbour, dropping only two games in singles
and doubles.
The St Clair win by three sets was set up after it won three
singles in straight sets.
Jeff Elliotte beat higher ranked Dwayne Cleugh 7-6 7-5 and
Darryl Paterson was too consistent for promising junior
Oliver Reid, taking a 6-1 6-3 result.
The sole success for Mornington Roslyn went to North Otago
representative Nick Dalziel, who beat Mayuresh Prasad 6-2 in
the third set.
Mornington Roslyn won both doubles in third set tiebreaks but
it was not enough to tip the balance.
Sian English (St Clair) beat Brittany Wong 7-6 6-3 and Lauren
Fowler needed a third-set tiebreak to beat Alice Bourne, but
the Balmacewen pair struck back with a 6-4 6-4 doubles win.
