Marie Soffe, of Dunedin, is all concentration as she competes in the masters section of the Otago powerlifting championships in Dunedin on Saturday.

She was one of 28 athletes from around the South Island to take part in the championships.

No major records were broken but there were plenty of first-time competitors having a go.

Winton lifter Bronwyn Stevens was the top lifter with a score of 398.76 points.

Second was Tom Hart, of Dunedin, with 384.63 points. In third place was Bernard O'Sullivan, also of Dunedin, with a score of 378.72 points.

The emphasis was on setting qualifying marks for the national championships, which will be in Auckland in September.

The Otago Olympic-style weightlifting championships will take place this Saturday.
