Weightlifting: Taking the strain

Dunedin weightlifter Amanda Gould attempts a lift at the South Island Olympic Weightlifting championships in Dunedin on Saturday.

More than 70 lifters competed in the event during the weekend, at which several new marks were set.

The Otago women's team won the team grade, although many of the lifters competed as individuals.

Savannah-Rose Corbett won the women's 75kg-plus category and Gould won the 63kg category. Kiri Sharp won the women's 53kg category.

Gould was named female lifter of the competition.

Andy Barakauskas, who competed in the 105kg-plus category and hails from Christchurch, won his division and was picked as the male lifter of the competition.

Otago lifter Raymond Siew won the 62kg division but in the male categories many of the Christchurch lifters triumphed.

Doug Sekone-Fraser, of Christchurch, won the 105kg grade and the Christchurch City Weightlifting Club the male teams event.
