Peter Appleby set a provincial record in the masters over age
55 class at the Otago weightlifting championships at Mosgiel
on Saturday.
Appleby, who was competing in the Olympic lifting competition
in the over 105kg class, had a record total of 190kg.
This consisted of a snatch of 85kg and a clean and jerk of
105kg.
Douglas Sekone won the junior men's 77kg title with a snatch
of 100kg and a clean and jerk of 130kg for a total of 230kg.
Richard Armitage, in his first Olympic class competition, won
the men's open 105kg class with a snatch of 90kg and a clean
and jerk of 120kg for a total of 210kg.
In the push and pull competition Garth Johnstone joined a
select few Otago lifters who have lifted 300kg in the
deadlift.
It was a personal best lift by 20kg.
Novice lifters to better 200kg in the deadlift were Rhys
Keith 220kg and Kent Smith 210kg.
