Additional car-parking space will be created near the
Cromwell Mall, off Waenga Dr, to encourage more use of
Anderson Park and its gardens.
The Cromwell Community Board had previously allocated $60,000
for the project, and this week decided on a final location
and site plan.
About 34 car parks will be created between the park's
playground and a nearby fountain, by extending and
reconfiguring the existing parking space.
Access to the car park is off Waenga Dr, and Cromwell's old
sun dial as well as the rose garden are nearby.
Board members discussed whether instead to create car parks
on a grassy section between Waenga Dr and the Cromwell Swim
Centre, but decided to leave the space as it was an
attractive part of town.
Extending the existing car park would likely encourage more
visitors to the rose garden, fountain, sun dial, and park,
board chairman Neil Gillespie said.
Board member Terry Emmitt was concerned the rose garden's
"ambience" would be lost if additional car parks were
developed, but conceded it was not a well-used area at
present.
Central Otago District Council roading manager Julie Muir
said work should start within a month.
Costs could be reduced by about $8000 if existing metal could
be reused, she said.
