Children toasting marshmallows are believed to be responsible
for a grass fire in a Ranfurly reserve on Wednesday night.
Ranfurly Chief Fire Officer James Hazlett said about 5sq m of
grass was burnt underneath trees in the Charlemont St East
reserve, near the camping ground.
"It appears it might have been started by kids toasting
marshmallows.
"There were fizzy drinks and other things in the area and it
looked as if it was being used by kids," he said.
Two volunteer firefighters discovered the fire and luckily it
had been "dead calm", with no wind to fan the flames.
The temperature reached 35degC in Ranfurly that day and the
fire risk was still high, Mr Hazlett said.
