A 58-year-old Dunedin man is in hospital with serious
injuries after crashing his motorcycle near Naseby about noon
on Saturday.
The man, who flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital, was on
his way to the 26th annual Vincent County Rally at Galloway,
near Alexandra.
Senior Constable Steve Burke, of Ranfurly, said police were
still investigating the cause of the crash.
No other vehicles were involved and there were no witnesses,
he said.
Members of the Naseby and Ranfurly volunteer fire brigades
attended the crash, as well as police and ambulance crews.
It happened on a 100kmh section of road near the Naseby golf
course.
Snr Const Burke said the man's injuries were serious,
although he was expected to live.
More than 1400 people attended the two-night rally, which is
annually organised by the Otago branch of the Bikers Rights
Organisation of New Zealand (Bronz).
Bronz president Ron McKay, of Dunedin, said that, other than
the Naseby crash, there were no incidents associated with the
event.
The crowd was well-behaved, he said.
"It was absolutely fantastic. The weather was brilliant, the
crowd was great, the music was great, and nothing major
happened.
"We had 1450 happy, well-behaved people," Mr McKay said.
Motorcyclists started arriving at the rally on Friday, and
all but about 20 had left by 9.30am yesterday. rosie.manins@odt.co.nz
