Cromwell College's competitive rowing crew now has a
purpose-built enclosure to store its equipment, thanks to help
from the community.
A 20m by 15m area was fenced for, and dedicated to, the squad
and would be further enhanced in coming weeks, coach Maude
O'Connell said.
The space was added to Cromwell College's existing aquatic
centre at McNulty Inlet, and meant rowers could easily train
for competitions.
"Up until now the boats have been on a trailer and stored in
commercial buildings in Cromwell, from which we have had to
move them to the lake [Dunstan].
"Now the crew can be on the water at 6am because the boats
are right there," Mrs O'Connell said.
Cromwell contractors had supplied materials, tools, and
labour at no cost to develop the enclosure, which would also
include a concrete ramp into Lake Dunstan and covered racks
to store boats, she said.
Eventually, it would have capacity to store about 10 boats.
"It's been amazing.
"People just heard about us needing a better space and made
it happen."
Mrs O'Connell said this was the second year Cromwell College
had a representative rowing squad, and its members were
seriously committed to the sport.
They trained at least four times a week, often from 6am, in
preparation for the South Island and New Zealand secondary
school rowing championships in March, she said.
