Firefighters battle blaze

More than 20 volunteer firefighters from Roxburgh and Millers Flat spent almost four hours extinguishing a blaze and dampening hot spots on private property near the Clutha River at Dumbarton early yesterday.

The Roxburgh and Millers Flat fire brigades, and the rural Millers Flat crew, were called to the property about 1.10am.

Roxburgh Deputy Chief Fire Officer David Welsh said tree stumps and other vegetation were alight within an area of about 100 sq m behind an orchard.

The fire spread over a steep embankment close to the Clutha River and was difficult to extinguish in the dark, he said.

"We couldn't safely get firefighters down the actual bank so [we] had to pump water on to the area from above.

"We got home about 4am," Mr Welsh said.

Two appliances and a "smoke-chaser" were used, he said.

Firefighters were called back to the property to dampen flare-ups about 12.30pm yesterday.

The cause of the fire was not known.
