Oceana fitter injured in mining accident

A man was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with a dislocated pelvis and ankle after an accident at Oceana Gold's Macraes gold mine in East Otago, about 12.30pm yesterday.

Chief executive Mark Cadzow said the man, a fitter, had been working on the boom in the mine's workshop when it rolled on to his ankle and lower body.

It was quickly lifted off him using a jack.

The company had started an internal investigation into the incident and notified the Department of Labour.
