Police are investigating whether there is a link between a fatal motorcycle crash near Oamaru on Thursday and a car found burnt out 15km inland from the crash site.

Yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie said police were working to establish who owned the 1995 light-coloured, grey two-door Nissan Skyline GTS.

They want to hear from anyone who might have seen it on State Highway 1 in the Richmond area between 3.30am and 4.30am on Thursday.

"Until we have completed all of our investigations and have all the information we need, we're not prepared to comment on any possible link or on why we might believe there is a link," Det Snr Sgt Blackie said.

The name of the 18-year-old Morven man killed in the crash on State Highway 1 at Richmond has not yet been released.

While next of kin had been informed, his name would not be released until he was formally identified. That was likely to happen today.

The Nissan Skyline was found burnt out on Horse Gully Rd. A specialist crash investigation team was investigating the site.

Specialist crash investigators were also continuing to examine the motorcycle crash scene and that was also expected to be completed yesterday.

Police wanted anyone who knew of a person or people who might have been on the road in that make and model of car around that time to contact Oamaru police on (03) 433-1400 or provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111, Det Snr Sgt Blackie said.

About 12 police officers have been investigating the crash.
