Open mind over motorbike crash

Police are keeping an open mind as to why young Morven dairy farm worker Tom Fry fell off his motorcycle at Richmond, north of Pukeuri, last Thursday.

Mr Fry (18) who was farewelled at a service at the Oamaru Club yesterday afternoon, was riding his green Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle to work when the crash happened about 3.50am at the intersection of State Highway 1 and York St, just north of Pukeuri.

The crash was not reported until about 4.20am when a passing truck driver saw the motorcycle on the side of the road.

Police were confident there was a connection between a burnt-out Nissan Skyline car, found later that day on Horse Gully Rd, and the motorcycle crash scene, but have still not established what happened at the crash site.

Horse Gully Rd is about 15km inland from the crash scene.

Asked whether a hit and run was one scenario, Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie said there were "a number of options".

Police had "everything on the table at the moment" and were not focusing on any one option.

Number plates and other identifying characteristics were removed from the 1995 Nissan Skyline GTS.

The removal of identification was "not the actions of an innocent person".

If the vehicle had accidentally gone on fire, if the occupant or occupants were innocent, they would have reported it to police by now, he said.

Police wanted the occupant or occupants of the Skyline to come forward, whether connected to the motorcycle crash or not.

Police have also urged members of the public to come forward with any information or sightings of the Skyline, however minor they might think it.

"We want anything and everything. We just implore people to come forward and assist," Det Snr Sgt Blackie said.

Early tomorrow, members of the rural drink-drive team will have a checkpoint operating on State Highway 1, stopping both north and southbound traffic, and it was planned to run a similar operation on Horse Gully Rd.

It was hoped some information might be generated from motorists who also used those roads last Thursday, he said.

About a dozen police were working on the investigation.

The Oamaru Club's hall was packed for the service for Mr Fry.

Those giving tributes included his brother Hamish, sister Lizzy, and partner Hannah Willetts.
