Sandra Hawkins may have been involved with the Scouting movement for 25 years but she has no plans for retirement.

"I'll probably be around for a while," said Mrs Hawkins (60), who was first warranted as an assistant cub leader in 1984.

Mrs Hawkins, who lives at Awamoko, is one of nine North Otago people who will be presented with awards in Oamaru on Sunday night.

The highest honour will go to Tony Brady, who is receiving Scouting New Zealand's highest good service award, the Silver Tui, in recognition of his exceptional services to the movement.

Mrs Hawkins is one of four receiving the Silver Tiki for distinguished service. The others are Vic McDonald, Beryl Aker and Ray Fogarty.

Bev Smith and Avril Keep will receive the bronze tiki, and Neville Corry and Chris Moran the Chief Scout's commendation.

About 130 people are expected to attend Sunday's function.

Mrs Hawkins said her involvement with the organisation began through her children. She initially went along as "mother help" and ended up a leader.

She is assistant zone cub leader and has also taken over Derek Beveridge's role as North Otago zone leader while he is on holiday.

There are about 120 youth members in North Otago, making it one of the larger zones in the Southern region, Mrs Hawkins said.

She said she enjoyed the contact with the children, their parents and the leaders.

"You meet so many people."

While several branches had closed down, usually because of lack of leaders, there are plans to start cubs in Palmerston, provided a suitable building could be found.
