Age Concern staff to call on council tenants

Age Concern welfare officers will visit community housing tenants four times a year as part of a new Waitaki District Council move.

The arrangement was designed to see how well tenants were coping, council property and parks manager Dougall McIntyre said.

Age Concern Oamaru branch staff would relay the information to the council.

Staff would also introduce pensioners to each other individually and then in small groups to enhance their social lives.

The council has begun insulating and installing heat-pumps in its properties, tenanted largely by senior citizens.

The 65 council-owned units are to be retrofitted by July 24.

The project is being subsidised by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, which is paying about 60% of the cost.

Private companies are providing services and equipment at a reduced price.
