Water supply given Aa grading

The Waitaki District Council is toasting its new Ministry of Health Aa grading for the Oamaru water supply - a far cry from seven years ago when it was rated Ee.

In announcing the grading at a council meeting on Monday, chief executive Michael Ross said the water was discoloured and foul tasting in 2002.

The Ee grading then meant it was completely unsatisfactory and there was a very high level of risk for both the water source and treatment, and the distribution system.

In September 2007, a new treatment plant was officially opened - the biggest expenditure on the water supply since the creation of the scheme that opened in 1880.

Mr Ross was "absolutely delighted" with the new grading, which meant it was completely satisfactory, extremely low level of risk and demonstrably high quality.

The council's water manager, Martin Pacey, who championed the project from initial inception and consultation through to design, construction, commissioning and proving, was also proud of the result.
