Work began yesterday on repairing the damaged Marine Parade seawall at Oamaru Harbour.

Rooneys Earthmoving has been contracted by the Waitaki District Council to reclaim a large quantity of stonework that has fallen loose on to the seabed over many years.

The intention was to replicate the original condition of the seawall and to stabilise the Marine Parade rock wall.

The work, which will cost about $10,000, should be finished by the end of next week, harbourside project co-ordinator Rex Stringer says.

The work has been approved by the Historic Places Trust, Department of Conservation and the Otago Regional Council.

The seawall repair was the first stage of the harbourside walking and cycling track the council approved earlier this year as part of its long-term community plan 2009.
