There could well be fairies in the bottom of the Wonderland gardens at the Oamaru Public Gardens tomorrow.

The gardens, which were developed to enhance the Wonderland statue, were officially opened by the mayor of Dunedin, Sir Leonard Wright, on October 31, 1959.

More than 2000 people attended the event.

The Wonderland statue, sometimes referred to as the Peter Pan statue, was created by Scottish sculptor Thomas J. Clapperton.

Inspired by Sir George Frampton's Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, it was given by former mayor Robert Milligan in 1926.

A celebration to mark the anniversary will be held tomorrow from 11am, with activities for children centred around the theme of Wonderland.

There will be a treasure hunt, story-telling, face-painting, clowns, balloon making, a Noddy train and sausage sizzle.

There are ideas to further enhance the area, subject to funding.
