Five Forks School went to the dogs yesterday - and to the lambs, calves, fish, chooks and pigs.

A pet day was revived at the rural North Otago school, after a hiatus of many years, and the children loved it.

Children dressed in fancy dress and there were farmers, cowboys, pirates, Spiderman and even a hula dancer, with matching lamb.

Competitions ranged from best leader to best "trick-doer" and, for the calves and lambs, best drinker.

That competition was fierce.

Principal Cate Bole said the day was largely revived due to parent interest.

Members of the local pre-school also turned out for the day.

While lambs, calves and dogs were the most popular pets, there were also several fish, Ralph the rooster, a hen with 3-day-old chickens and pigs Bruce and Oz.

The North Otago A and P Association is holding a pet day at the showgrounds on November 15.
