When it comes to ponies, it's hard to beat Cotswold Asterix in the cuteness stakes.

The Shetland pony, with owner Shona Cusack, of Oamaru, recently achieved success at the New Zealand Shetland Pony Breeders Society's annual show at Kaiapoi.

Asterix won champion adult gelding and then went up against the winner of the young stock gelding class to win supreme champion pony in section.

He was also fourth in best presented and fourth in the paced class, and his paddock-mate, 19-year-old Chelsea, won best veteran.

While it was always a "real buzz" to win a ribbon, to do well at a breed show was very special, Mrs Cusack said.

There were 18 geldings entered at the show.

Mrs Cusack bought Asterix, who is now 4, as a weanling from prominent Canterbury breeder Diana Humphries from the Cotswold Shetland pony stud.

Trying to name him was difficult - "like trying to name a baby" - and she eventually spotted the Asterix books in the bookcase and decided to call him Asterix - "small and strong without the magic potions".

Today, Asterix will be put through his paces at the North Otago A and P Show.

Mrs Cusack and her little 9.2 hands charge usually attend about 10 shows.

Asterix has a particular fondness for having his backside scratched and he is always keen for half a carrot every morning.

Asterix's next challenge is to pull a cart.

He is skilled at towing a tyre, but Mrs Cusack is planning on getting a cart for him.
