An Oamaru man was killed early yesterday when he was hit by a
train while on the platform of the Oamaru Railway Station.
Oamaru police sergeant Wayne Brew said the 28-year-old man
was believed to have gone to the station to eat a pizza and
was sitting on the edge of the platform.
Sgt Brew said it appeared the man fell asleep and was hit by
the northbound freight train about 1.40am.
Police were unable to release the man's name yesterday
because next of kin were still being notified.
Sgt Brew said the train's driver notified train control of
the accident and police were called.
The train was held up for about two hours while a replacement
driver was sent to take over.
Details of the fatal accident are still being investigated
and will be referred to the coroner.
