Race Relations Day is to be celebrated in Oamaru this year
with a concert at the Opera House, organised by the Waitaki
Multicultural Council.
Each year, the council organised an event with a different
theme to promote harmonious race relations and this year's
theme was "It's About Us - Whanau", council spokesman Jack
Chandra said.
This year, Race Relations Day falls on March 21 - a Sunday -
so the concert has been set down for the following Saturday
night, starting at 7pm.
There will be a variety of performances from different ethnic
groups, including a Chinese lion dance, Indian, Korean,
Filipino, Pacific Islands and New Zealand acts.
Leading up to the concert, the council has organised a poster
competition judged by North Otago artists for senior
schoolchildren, a speech contest for high school pupils with
the finals in the Opera House on Friday, March 19, a costume
display at the North Otago Museum and a display in the Oamaru
Library.
