Wyatt Ryder may not have a career in pumpkin growing.

Wyatt (11) had the distinction of entering the smallest pumpkin in Ardgowan School's pumpkin-growing competition on Saturday.

The pint-sized vegetable - more akin to a pebble than a pumpkin - secured the booby prize.

The competition, held as part of the school's third pumpkin festival, was won by Madison Blackgrove with a whopping 44.4kg entry, followed by the Meikle family's entry, at 34.6kg.

Wyatt said he had "no idea" why the growth of his pumpkin was stunted and the growth formula he used had obviously not worked.

Pumpkins lined the entranceway to the school, there were competitions to guess the number of pumpkin seeds in a jar, pumpkin soup for sale and pumpkin food competitions.

There was a fair-like atmosphere, with stalls, face painting, gumboot throwing and a dunking machine.
