Two Waikouaiti Coast Community Board members have
highlighted a "missing link" of roadway in their quest to
improve cycle safety in the area.
Deputy chairwoman Geraldine Tait and board member Dr Nancy
Higgins cycled from Warrington to this week's board meeting
in Waitati to raise awareness of a dangerous section of road
on the route.
Cyclists can travel on the shoulder of State Highway 1 from
Evansdale south towards Waitati, but the wide sealed verge
ends at Double Hill Rd, several hundred metres from the
township.
Ms Tait and Dr Higgins want this section, which they refer to
as "the missing link", widened and sealed.
"There are a few people in the area who cycle to the store
[in Waitati] from Warrington, and tourists who are cycling
between sections of the scenic route along the coast, so we
definitely think it could be dangerous for them . . . and
[it] is a barrier to riding between settlements," Dr Higgins
said.
The New Zealand Transport Agency, which is responsible for
highway roading, had not responded to questions from the
Otago Daily Times about the likelihood of a cycleway
being included on the section of road.
