Six southern police officers are
stood down or suspended at present pending the outcome of
internal police investigations or court proceedings.
Officers facing charges include a North Otago officer, who
was suspended in September last year on indecent assault
charges, and a Gore officer charged with fraud. Both relate
to incidents last year.
Two Dunedin officers are awaiting trial in the Dunedin
District Court on assault charges after they allegedly
punched a man while he was being arrested in March last year.
Another southern officer, whose identity and charges are
suppressed, is also still before the district court.
A Central Otago-based officer has been stood down from duties
for 30 days while police complete an internal investigation
into unspecified allegations.
All the officers were on full pay while stood down or
suspended.
Southern police district operations manager Inspector Lane
Todd said the North Otago officer was suspended in late
September immediately the allegation was made.
He declined to comment further while the matter was before
the court.
